Top 10 Family Days Out in the East Riding of Yorkshire
I LOVE living in East Yorkshire; it has something for everyone, from the stunning
costal resorts of Flamborough, Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea, to the bustling
city of Hull (Capital of Culture 2017), the pretty market town of Beverley or the
picturesque villages nestled around the Yorkshire Wolds. It’s also super family-friendly.
Here’s our top 10 attractions to visit:
Burnby Hall Gardens

Located in Pocklington well hidden behind walls in the centre of town you will find this hidden gem! Burnby Hall Gardens are set around two lakes, famed for its hardy water lilies, and where you will find the greediest fish (make sure you buy plenty of fish food on entry). Tranquil lakes aside, there are some beautiful gardens to explore, including a secret garden, a Victorian garden, a rockery, and aviary garden and a stumpery. There’s also a good playground and café with the yummiest food. I used to love taking my children here when they were little as it was small enough for them to be able to walk around and was a lovely way to spend a day.
William’s Den

William’s Den is imaginative play at its best, inside there’s a huge tree themed indoor frame, all-natural play with things to climb, scramble, slides, sand, water, the list goes on… (don’t forget a change of clothes!) Outside is also very imagination based, with a large sand area, zip wires, swings, den building, logs and rocks to climb on, mud kitchens etc etc… Plus it has the best café with delicious wood fired pizzas and creamy ice cream.
Let Loose! Adventure Park

Located near Beverley, Let Loose! Adventure Park has something for all ages, including a high ropes adventure course, low ropes course, roller skating, go carts, leap of faith and drop slide, climbing wall, archery, zip wires, squirrel run, adventure playground and soft play tepee. Age and height restrictions apply so make sure you check these out in advance. There’s also a lovely café for after you’ve worked up an appetite. A great place for slightly older kids where playgrounds just don’t cut it anymore.
The Deep

The Deep is an award-winning aquarium, home to over 5,000 creatures including green sawfish, sharks, stingrays, turtles and gentoo penguins. There are amazing marine displays and fun interactive exhibits, and it’s also a really good place for little ones to toddle down the gentle ramps and enjoy the sensory elements. You can bring your own picnic here to eat part way round, or they have a café at the end with fabulous views over the river.
Burton Agnes Hall

This stunning manor house, Burton Agnes Hall, is located between Driffield and Bridlington. The gardens are what make this place so lovely to visit, with its award-winning borders, yew maze, giant garden games, woodland walk with sculptures to spot, plus the spacious lawns to run around and the friendly fish. They also have an amazing wooden adventure playground with something for everyone, including a double zip wire, tall tower slide, basket / tyre swings, seesaw, roundabout and more, not forgetting smaller equipment for toddlers. They often have a van making woodfire pizza for after when you’ve worked up an appetite! Plus, they often have seasoned events running.
Danes Dyke Beach

Located between Sewerby and Flamborough, you will find this stunning nature reserve just off the main road. It’s a stunning walk-through woodland before arriving at the beach. The beach itself is stony and naturally chalky but is great for rock pooling and fossil hunting. There are well marked routes either side of the ravine for those who want to explore this area further.
East Park

East Park Hull is a Grade II listed park in the centre of Hull, it has something for everyone with 130 acres of parkland, an animal education centre, library, café, pedalos, mini golf, splash boat rise, carousel, a large well-equipped playground, and the BEST 43 water jet water splash park. The best bit, most of it is completely free (and the carousel / mini golf / land train / splash boat ride / pedalos were all reasonably priced if you wanted to splash out).
Sledmere House

Sledmere House near Driffield makes a lovely day out, with a small, rare breed farm, stables, adventure playground, a lovely walled garden (which my kids loved playing hide and seek in), plus walks for little ones to burn off steam running around. There’s also a café, farm shop, garden centre and gift shop / home store. They also do themed events including a maize maze in summer, and deer safaris. We’ve never been in the house as the times its open is limited (plus its cheaper just to enter the gardens) but there’s also a little museum. However, it’s not the cheapest day out compared to some other stately homes in the area and what they have to offer, especially as things like the deer safari are an extra cost.
Sewerby Hall & Gardens

Uniquely situated in a dramatic cliff top position with views over Bridlington, Sewerby Hall & Gardens has something for everyone, from the magnificent gardens to the zoo. Animals include the penguins, lemurs, llamas and coatis amongst many more. The gardens are a great place to visit whatever the season, with the walled, pleasure and rose gardens taking centre stage throughout the summer months. They have recently added a new outdoor play area in the woodland (which is more suited to older children) alongside the main playground. And there’s various events throughout the year.
West Park

West Park is the largest and one of the most popular public parks in Goole, covering more than 32 acres. It has facilities for all the family including toddler, junior and inclusive play equipment including a wheelchair swing and roundabout, together with a whole host of sports and exercise equipment including a multi-use games area, basketball rings, gym equipment, sports pitches, and a bowling green. The thing we visit for though is the two pump tracks, which are perfect for little ones to test out their bike skills. Plus, there’s
a cafe (and toilets) for when you’ve worked up an appetite.
