A Magical Christmas Visit to Mother Shipton’s Cave: Family Day Out in Knaresborough

If you’re looking for one of the best family Christmas days out in Yorkshire, our visit today to the Mother Shipton’s Cave Christmas Experience proved once again why it’s such a popular festive tradition. Despite the heavy rain, our spirits stayed high and the weather did not spoil the magic for us one bit. Our Santa time slot was 2:40pm and with dusk approaching soon after, the twinkling lights around the woodland created a truly enchanting atmosphere.

Christmas Activities & First Impressions

Mother Shipton’s are renowned for their beautiful event theming, and this year’s Christmas experience was no exception. On arrival, the children each received a festive envelope containing a bag to fill with reindeer food, a letter to write to Santa and a wish card for the wishing tree.

Eliza and Cole were completely absorbed in writing their letters and adored posting them in the Christmas sorting office, decorated with snowy white owls and cosy winter touches – a perfect photo opportunity for families.

Meeting Santa: What to Expect

Because entry is linked to your Santa visit time slot, visitors are only allowed into the site 15 minutes beforehand. It works well, but it does mean it’s best to explore the rest of the Christmas village after meeting Father Christmas.

Before your Santa visit, you spend some time inside the elves’ greeting tent. The Christmas elves were brilliant, full of chat, humour and festive cheer, keeping everyone entertained while we waited to go through the magic doors to meet Santa.

Meeting Father Christmas was a lovely, personal experience. He spoke to the children individually, asked thoughtful questions and listened carefully to everything they wanted to share. Each child received a special Christmas gift and you are given a QR code to purchase your Santa photo and small souvenirs afterwards.

Food, Treats & Cosy Spots

Once outside, we warmed up with sweet treats, including a deluxe hot chocolate and the fun of toasting our own giant marshmallow. The festive food vans were beautifully decorated and offered a simple but tasty menu of hot snacks, sausage rolls, cakes and confectionery as well as an array of hot and cold drinks. Plenty of covered seating meant we could relax without worrying about the weather. Although the playground was closed due to the rain, the children were far too excited to notice.

Woodland Walk, Cave & Petrifying Well

We then took a magical woodland walk to the petrifying well and Mother Shipton’s Cave. The pathway was decorated with lights and storytelling moments which made for a lovely walk. Once at the well, the children loved pressing the interactive speakers to learn about the history and myths of Mother Shipton. It’s always a highlight of their visit.

Gift Shop & Story Time

Before heading home, we stopped at the gift shop, packed with souvenirs, Christmas decorations and magical themed gifts – perfect for anyone who loves mythology or witchcraft inspired items.

On the way back to the car park, we made our reindeer food and ended our visit with a cosy story time with Holly Berry. Her Christmas jokes had the children in stitches, and they loved sharing their own in return.

Accessibility & Pram-Friendliness

For families visiting with little ones, Mother Shipton’s is pram friendly from the car park to the main Christmas village. The paths are smooth and easy to navigate. Once you reach the village, you’ll find plenty of undercover buggy parking, which is where you’ll need to leave your pram if you want to explore the petrifying well and Mother Shipton’s Cave, as those paths involve steps and uneven ground. It’s very well organised and makes the experience stress-free for parents.

There is also a toilet block near the entrance gates, ideal to stop at before or after your Santa visit. Within the Christmas village, you’ll find additional portaloos, a big help when visiting with children.

Hi I’m Georgina, mummy to 3 beautiful children. I have lived in Yorkshire all my life and just love the variety of days out that this beautiful place has to offer from stunning views out in the countryside to indoor adventures . My little ones are a real bundle of energy so we love getting out to discover new places to explore and make memories! When I’m not out and about with my babies, I work part time as a Baby Sensory Class leader in Heckmondwyke at Baby Sensory North Huddersfield. I also teach pregnancy and post natal yoga, ( which includes baby yoga too!) at Ryecroft Yoga and Wellness. As a mum of 3 myself I have a deep understanding of the challenges you can face in pregnancy and motherhood so love that I get to support new mums and parents and create a warm and welcoming space for them to connect with themselves, bond with their babies and make new friends.
