A February Half-Term Adventure at Wentworth Castle Gardens

If you’re looking for a brilliant half-term day out, Wentworth Castle Gardens is the great mix of outdoor adventure, book-themed fun, and delicious treats! Lily and I had such a lovely time climbing castle turrets, exploring gardens, getting crafty, and indulging in our National Trust tradition – a luxury hot chocolate!

Here’s everything we loved about our day out:

Adventure Play Area

I don’t know what it is about National Trust adventure play areas, but they’ve been entertaining mine for over a decade now! Lily loves anything that involves climbing, balancing, and a zip line, and the giant wooden castle in the centre is always a hit. It’s the perfect place to let off steam before or after a nice walk.

Books & Boots

This half-term, Wentworth Castle Gardens is celebrating two of our favourite things – stories and outdoor adventures – with the Books & Boots event!

Wentworth Welly Boot Wander

To help encourage little legs around the property, you’ll want to try the Wentworth Welly Boot Wander, which is open until March 2. It is a fun scavenger hunt where kids can search for creatively planted wellies hidden around the gardens and follow activities like getting your wellies to kiss and making a human bridge.

Stainborough Castle

The turrets of Stainborough Castle are a highlight of any visit! We had so much fun climbing up, taking in the views. It may be a folly, but it’s such a great spot for a bit of imaginative play and fresh air

Second-Hand Books in the Reading Room

A hidden gem inside Wentworth Castle Gardens is the Reading Room second-hand bookshop. We found some excellent pre-loved books to take home, making it a perfect little stop for book lovers. The space is cozy, and it’s a great place to find a bargain while supporting the National Trust.

On Thursday, 20 February, you can join in to celebrate the Reading Room’s first birthday, which will include storytelling sessions for all ages.

Create Bookmarks or Crafts

Lily absolutely loved the craft station where families could create bookmarks and crafts using old book pages. She made a sweet little bug bookmark that’s now tucked into one of her new books from the Reading Room. These free drop-in craft sessions run from 17th–21st February, 11:30 AM–2:30 PM.

National Trust Café and Pizza Oven

We never visit a National Trust without getting a hot chocolate – go luxury or go home! The lemon drizzle cake was very tasty as well.

Just outside the Conservatory, Burncross Pizzeria serves wood-fired pizza, drinks, and snacks during school holidays and weekends. We originally bought just a slice of pizza, but it was so good that we went back and ordered the whole pizza!

Walks and Gardens

Wentworth Castle Gardens is such a beautiful place to explore, no matter the season. There are woodland trails, winding paths, and gorgeous views everywhere you look. Whether you fancy a short, family-friendly stroll or a longer adventure, there’s plenty to discover.

The paths are buggy-friendly, but fair warning – they can be pretty steep in places. If you’re pushing a pram, be ready for a bit of a workout! That said, there’s a buggy service that goes up the hill for anyone who needs a helping hand, which is a great option if little legs (or tired grown-up ones) need a break.

One of the best parts of wandering around? You’re likely to catch a glimpse of the deer in the distance. We spotted a few grazing in the Deer Park, which made the walk even more special.

The Conservatory

The Victorian Conservatory is a beautiful stop on your walk. With its grand glass structure and a variety of plants, it’s a lovely, peaceful spot to enjoy. It also provides a break from the February weather!
