Universal Credit Discounts in Yorkshire

The cost of a day out at a historic home and paid-for museums and gardens can be prohibitive for low-income families, especially in light of the cost-of-living crisis and the increased cost of basics (like food and clothing).

While many venues have reduced their ticket types to simplify what is available, with some removing concessions altogether, some venues have introduced a cheaper ticket option for people receiving income support. Kay at @busandbeyonduk has collated a list of the venues in Yorkshire that offer discounted tickets for families receiving Universal Credit.

Harewood House

Harewood House has a £2 ticket for people receiving income support, or who have refugee status – these tickets are called Access+. Access+ tickets can be booked online and proof is required on entry – this can be your latest monthly statement, for example.

They require proof of one of the following: Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Refugee Status. Up to four people from the same household can benefit from the offer (including children, but the price remains £2 regardless of age), and Access+ tickets are not available for workshops and special events (such as the Great British Food Festival and Father Christmas Experience).

RHS Harlow Carr

RHS Harlow Carr

RHS Harlow Carr are keen to share the love of gardening with everyone, and families receiving income support can book tickets for £1 per person. An individual receiving income support can book £1 tickets for themselves as well as up to five people visiting the gardens with them – only one person in the group needs to demonstrate proof of benefits. These tickets can be pre-booked online ahead of your visit.

Proof of income support is required to be shown on arrival for one of the following: Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-based Employment and Support Allowance.

City of York Council venues, York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, and Yorkshire Museum have a free concession where recipients of means-tested benefits, including Universal Credit, are included. The free concession also includes MAX Card holders (one card admits up to two adults and two children), and people seeking sanctuary or who are in the asylum process. Children of York residents can already visit for free (16 and under with YO postcodes within City of York Council), but the inclusion of people in receipt of means-tested benefits increases opportunities for adults on a low-income and low-income families who live outside of York to visit the Art Gallery and Museums for free. Proof of eligibility for free concessions are required on entry and tickets can be pre-booked online (select view more ticket options to reveal Concession, Free).

Castle Howard

Castle Howard offers Universal Credit and Max Card tickets, however, there isn’t a set annual price. For example, prior to this year’s Christmas experience, tickets were available for the house and gardens for £3 per person (for a maximum of one adult and up to three children per group). Now that the Christmas experience is in full swing, discounted tickets are available for £5 per person for Christmas at Castle Howard and the Wonderful Wizard of Oz on yellow ticket types displaying £23 for a full adult price. This offer remains restricted to one adult and up to three children.

Between 13th November 2025 and 4th January 2026, £3 Max Card and Universal Credit tickets are also available for the Christmas Gardens (the price is per person and the tickets are valid for a maximum of one adult and up to three children). These concessionary tickets can be booked online.

The availability and price of Max Card and Universal Credit tickets for January 2026 onwards is not yet available.

Opera North

Howard Assembly Room

If you’re more interested in seeing a performance than visiting a stately home/museum, Opera North have £10 tickets available for recipients of Pension Credit, Disability Living Allowance, Leeds Card Extra, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Attendance Allowance, and Universal Credit. Proof must be shown and the Universal Credit discount may need to be booked by telephone or in person rather than online.

For Opera North events at Leeds Grand Theatre, Universal Credit tickets are restricted to Bands B-D, excluding Dress Circle, and there is no booking fee. For events at Howard Assembly Rooms, these tickets are for tickets priced £15 and above (so, the minimum discount will be £5 per person).

Income support tickets are also available for Opera North at Kirklees Concert Season and prices are between £11 and £24, depending on the seating location.
