Wild Swimming at Pool Bridge Farm near York

Pool Bridge Farm is my go-to place for a wild swim. This really popular wild swimming destination near York boasts four lakes and sells out fast, especially in warm weather! I’d recommend booking a week or more in advance during peak times to secure your space.

Tickets allow entry for the full day, or there is an option for evening swimming only.

Family Swimming at Pool Bridge Farm

Pool Bridge Farm welcomes families and children during the spring and summer months, when the water is warmer. Tickets for children become available on the website when the lakes are deemed warm enough for a summer swim — 12°C, which is still quite cold!

There are several lakes at Pool Bridge Farm, but most of them are adults-only or members-only. The largest lake, Q Lake, is open to families and children.

Swimming in Q Lake

Q Lake has lots of purpose-built access points with either steps or ramps. There are pontoons for jumping in, and you can take your own small inflatables.

The lake depth ranges from shallow areas where it is possible to stand to 12 feet deep in places.

There are plenty of grassy banks around the lake that are perfect for relaxing or picnicking, so remember to bring your picnic blankets or camping chairs.

How Cold Is the Water?

Be warned — the water in the lakes can feel very cold, even during warm weather. It’s advised that you enter slowly to acclimatise yourself to the temperature.

This is especially important with younger children, who may not want to spend too long in the water due to the cold temperature, so bear this in mind when planning your visit.

Water Safety for Children

It’s recommended that all non-swimmers or weak swimmers use a personal flotation device and are closely accompanied by an adult at all times.

The maximum adult-to-child ratio is 1:3 for competent swimmers. Waivers must be completed for all guests, both adults and children.

A separate section of Q Lake is dedicated to paddleboarding, and swimming is not permitted in this area.

Food and Drink at Pool Bridge Farm

There is a café on site, with ice cream and fish and chip vans also open at peak times.

The main café offers a range of hot and cold drinks, breakfasts, soup, sandwiches and cake. The café has indoor and outdoor seating, but we enjoyed a takeaway iced latte by the lake.

Changing Areas and Toilets

Toilets and communal changing areas are available, but we usually arrive with our swimming costumes under our clothes and simply change by the lake.

We saw another family with a small pop-up beach tent, which was a great idea for providing some shade and privacy!

Adults-Only Wild Swimming

Pool Bridge Farm is also a fantastic place to visit without the kids!

The adults-only lakes are very tranquil, especially Monet Lake with its beautiful lily pads. It’s not unusual to swim past a duck or spot other wildlife. Saunas can also be booked for an added bit of luxury.
