Another month, another clever Made in Yorkshire maker. This month we’re featuring Nathan Ward of Details Later. Nathan designs custom T-shirts inspired by pop culture and beyond! At last count we have around ten of his designs in the house. What can I say? We love a good custom t-shirt!
How long have you lived in Yorkshire?
I’m born and bred, though I’m not saying how long that is!
What are your top 3 places in Yorkshire to visit with your family?
Oakwell Hall – We’re so lucky to have a place like Oakwell Hall so near by, and it’s FREE!! (Which reminds me, I need to make a donation). We probably go there every other week, my kids love nothing better than putting on their waterproofs and wading through the stream.
Filey – I spent years thinking I hated the coast after a few awful school trips, but now I’ve got kids I have found my love for it again. There is plenty to do in the area, but equally you can just spend a day at the beach running in and out of the sea
The Yorkshire Dales – Ok, so this choice is quite sweepingly broad, but there is so much to do there and the landscape is beautiful. Last time we went we used Appletreewick as our base camp and got to see and do so many different things
What makes Yorkshire a great place to live?
The people, the landscape, the weather!
Can you tell us about your family?
We have two little boys who are quite wild
What three words would you use to describe Details Later?
Custom. Quirky. T-shirts.
Why did you start your business?
The idea of starting a t-shirt company was one that had been floating around for years in various forms, but it never really got off the ground. This time around it felt like a ‘now or never’ situation, I was at a bit of a low and need a new creative project so I took the plunge. It was the right thing to do too, I’m so proud of Details Later and it really gives me a boost to see that I have grown something.
What is your most popular product?
One of my most popular products is my Daddy Bear design, which started life as a custom order. It seems to work well as a Father’s Day gift or Christmas present.
Which product is your personal favourite?
I’m not sure I have a particular favourite, but some of the designs that I do are inspired by films that most people haven’t heard of, such as Troll 2 or Mega Force, so it always makes me smile when those designs are ordered. It’s good to know that there are others out there with the same obscure tastes as me!
What do you like the most about running your own business?
I like the creative freedom it gives me. It isn’t often in life that you are able to do things your own way, but having your own business is definitely one. I also like the amount of personal pride it gives me, I’m very proud of what I have achieved so far.
What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
Fitting Details Later in around a full time job and spending time with my family is definitely the biggest challenge. But I’m balancing it pretty well at the moment. I’d love to see the business develop and grow, but it has to be in the right way that doesn’t disrupt my family life.
Do you have any other Yorkshire small businesses that you would recommend?
Arlo & Bella: Papercuts, louisespixels, & Café Lulu
What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own business?
Go for it. For me, the initial set up costs were the scariest part, but if you have found a market that you can sell in, the long term rewards are well worth it. It is such a thrill to have your own business and see it working.
Awesome shirt designs! I admire your work!
Can I somehow sell/resell them at my store for graduation gifts ?
Hi Mihail – you’re best to get in touch with Nathan directly through his Facebook or Esty shop! Thanks!
