5 new things for January – Tried & Tested


True to cliche, my January list of new things includes a fitness challenge and a healthy treat alternative.  I have to say though, I’m really loving them both!  Have a peek at some of the new things we got up to this month and you’ll even have the chance to win one of them for yourself!

1.Oppo Ice Cream

Although I am always looking to cut down on my sugar intake, I am not always a fan of ‘healthy alternative’ desserts.  Sometimes ‘low calorie’ just means they’re full of artificial sweeteners and they taste like, well, artificial sweeteners.

However, done right, a healthy alternative can be a brilliant thing; It has all of the taste without all of the calories.  This is definitely the case with the Oppo ice cream I was sent to review. Made with virgin coconut oil, stevia leaf and fresh milk, Oppo has 60% less sugar than regular ice cream and far fewer calories.  The Columbian Chocolate and Hazelnut is rich, creamy deliciousness at only 43 calories a scoop.  Mamma’s happy treat!

2. Walk 1000 Miles Challenge

Last year I walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks and this year I really fancied another walking challenge.  I joined the #walk1000miles Facebook group for some inspiration and now I’m aiming for 100 miles a month for a total of 1,200 miles in 2018.  I’ve just hit my first 100 miles with 5 days left of the month so so far so good!

3. No Dark Shadows

I have always had dark shadows under my eyes, but since I’ve had kids they’ve gotten worse.  (I’m sure every person who has small people can relate!) When Know Cosmetics asked if I wanted to try out their new No Dark Shadows complexion enhancer I was keen to have a go.

No Dark Shadows comes in two tones, Wow Rosy Tone and Pizzazz Yellow Tone. The makeup is oil free and comes in a twist pen so it’s easy to apply and blend. As you can see below, it does really help cover the dark circles but I don’t think it does quite as well with my wrinkles.  (I have no makeup on below my left eye and No Shadows below my right).   It’s a bit thicker than my last under eye concealer and is longer lasting so I still have my under eyes covered at the end of the day.

4. Royal Armouries East Meets West Weekend

We have visited Royal Armouries in Leeds before, but we’ve never been for an event weekend. At the last minute we decided to visit for the East Meets West event and the kids loved it!   The activities and shows were mostly free including origami making, a chance to play Chinese musical instruments, and even ancient martial arts demonstrations.  We’re hoping to make it back for their Warrior Women event during February half term!

5. Pink Magazine

Sometimes after school a kid just needs a bit of fun!  Lily was delighted to be sent a copy of PINK magazine for a bit of play and wind down time this week.  PINK is designed for kids aged 4-9 and includes free gifts and stickers in every issue.

Lily’s issue came with a wand, a secret diary case, a notebook/diary and a Shopkins ring.  She already has big plans for her secret diary.  It’s probably a good thing her little brother can’t read much yet! 

PINK is also filled with stories, crafts, puzzles, plenty of coulouring and even a baking activity!  Many of Lily’s favourite toys were featured as well including Shopkins, Num Noms, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, and Shimmer & Shine.

    Creamy Mushroom Soup from Slimming World magazine mixed with quark! Was quite impressed with the creaminess and definitely recommend it to anyone following the plan. Love trying out new recipes all the while and whilst your talking about oppo ice cream that might be a new flavour that I’m looking at next

    Oh gosh, that ice-cream sounds so good. I love that its a healthier version too! No Dark Shadows is something I could do with so I’ll have to try some myself.

    I love the idea of the 1000 miles challenge. My son has recently got a dog, and it has been great to motivate him to go for long walks. He was talking about something like this the other day. I may point him in the direction of that FB page.

    To become more organised, with the help of a couple of diaries. Do have a number of commitments, though tend to be a go with the flow type of person. Fiancé is the one who tends to do the forward planning, now finding that I am providing him with ideas and suggestions. So maybe with the two of us we can have a more fulfilling life experience, and count our Blessings.

    The walking challenge is good. Walking is a great stress reliever.
    I have started to cook everything from scratch. I know what is going in my food and every says how tasty it is

    I have tried to gain a better look on life, i recently have become ill with a chronic illness i have been suffering for a few years, the news has been bad and i have fallen in a bout of depression living every day getting it over with, just an existence, Through all this i have forgotten my four children, forgotten how to enjoy every moment, all of a sudden i ve looked around i have a 2 yrs, 5yrs,7yrs and 8 years old that never asked for their mummy to be ill, daddy to have to leave the military to look after us all. so for them all i am making the most of what we have and trusting the drs will keep me here so i can see them grow old!

    Chopping wood! We had a log burner fitted just before Christmas and had a large amount of logs delivered. Lots of the logs are far too big to use so rather than wait for the other half to do it at the weekends i decided to chop it all myself. And a very good job i made of it too! 😉

    My great-nieces and great-nephew have tried proper swimming lessons for the first time and they absolutely love it. I’ve tried to start a diet (it’s coming slowly) in preparation for Septembers’ Award Ceremony for our local rugby league club as the photos from last year are gorgeous of the players and not so gorgeous of me. 🙂

    I’ve started swimming but because of neck pain I tried just treading water for an hour. Turns out it burns as many calories as swimming lengths and I don’t have to worry about having space in the pool. I just stay in my little corner and tread like I’ve never trodden before lol
